Herbal Teas: Brewing Times, Classic Blends and Safety
An herbal tea is the gentlest way to meet a plant: water, warmth and a few quiet minutes.
Infusion vs. decoction
Infusion (leaves and flowers): pour just-boiled water over 1–2 teaspoons dried herb per cup, cover, steep 5–10 minutes. Decoction (roots, bark, seeds): simmer 10–20 minutes. Cover infusions so the aromatic oils stay in the cup.
Classic blends
- Evening cup: chamomile + a pinch of lavender.
- After-dinner: peppermint + fennel seed.
- Warming winter: ginger slices + cinnamon stick + honey.
- Garden green: green tea + fresh mint.
- Golden milk: turmeric, black pepper, ginger, warm milk.
Safety
Limit licorice tea (it can raise blood pressure), avoid sage and fenugreek in medicinal amounts during pregnancy, and remember green tea contains caffeine. Never give honey to infants under 1 year.
